Confederates on the Caney : an illustrated account of the Civil War on the Texas Gulf Coast
Published in Unknown Binding by Mouth of Caney Publication ; Distributed by B.J. McKinney ()
Author: Bobby J. McKinney
Average review score:

A great Texas Civil War research book.
"Confederates on the Caney" is really a great research book for the Civil War in Texas. It is a first of its kind and Mr. McKinney did a wonderful job in giving us a first hand look at the civil war on the Texas gulf coast. Us Texas "Civil War" buffs now have something to read, learn and look at from Texas's role during the war. The maps are new and fresh as well as the many photos of the excavated artifacts such as buttons, bullets, buckles, ordnance and more. The book well describes the historical foot note of an event that took place in a small unlikely section on the Texas gulf coast. His use of perspectives from both Confederate and Federal view points from the "Official Records" enhance the story of Texas's resistance of Union occupation. There is a lot of information crammed into this little book. I look forward to seeing more of Mr. Mckinneys work.

Authors: Ben B. Boothe and Paulette Boothe
Average review score:

Great Book about what it is like to be a country banker
I am a country banker and I felt as if I were reading my autobiogrphy instead of a work of fiction by Ben Boothe. If you are a banker or ever knew a banker this book is for you.

It is a great book full of humor , homespun wisdom and tells it like it is to be a country banker. Great Work!

I require all new bankers that join my staff to read this book the first week that they are employed with my bank!

Constable's Run (Five Star First Edition Women's Fiction Series)
Published in Hardcover by Five Star (October, 2002)
Author: Laurie Moore
Average review score:

Cops, gypsies, loyalty, betrayal and revenge--Texas style!
Actor Larry Hagman endorsed this book, and so do I. In a "He said, she said" format, we see the relationship between Constable Jinx Porter and his loyal Reserve Deputy Constable, Raven, go from loyalty to betrayal to revenge. Jinx is running for re-election after sixteen years as Constable, and his opponent is unworthy but financially well-backed. The only one to help him is the beautiful, politically connected Raven, but when Jinx betrays her with an indiscriminate rendezvous with Loose-Wheel Lucille, Raven turns the tables on him. This is a fun, can't-put-down read that will have you laughing by page two. I loved this book, and would also recommend Moore's second book, THE LADY GODIVA MURDER. I understand the sequel, CONSTABLE'S APPREHENSION has an October 2003 release date. Pick these up. You won't be sorry.

Conversations With Isabel Allende (Texas Pan American Series)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (June, 1999)
Authors: Isabel Allende, John Rodden, and Virginia Invernizzi
Average review score:

FASCINATING
If you are captivated by Allende's novels and moved by her memoir then you will be equally enthralled with this work. Conversations with Isabel Allende is a collection of thirty-four interviews covering the life, work and assessment of Allende as a writer. The interviews are divided into three periods. The first begins in the mid-80's and is predominated by literary interviews given by academics and scholars of Latin American Literature. The second period (late 80's to 1991) consists of interviews that are biographical and focus on the relationship of her works with her life. The third set of interviews (1991-1994) deal with her relationship with her daughter, the impact of the Latin American Boom Writers on her work and how her move to the United States has impacted on her writing.

I was fascinated with this vast array of material which contains something for everyone. Allende deals with the probing questions of critics and academics regarding her style, structure and influences on her work. Her answers are most surprising in that she doesn't see herself as falling into any particular writing tradition. In fact she confesses her ignorance about those in the literary field who analyze and take apart her works for greater understanding.

Another part of the interviews that are intriguing is her sharing with us her life story, anecdotes, and challenges. You see an intimate portrait of her as a mother, journalist, feminist and novelist. Allendes warts as well as her beauty shines through. Her responses to the questions are a story unto themselves and you wonder if they are indeed true.

What is most important about this work is that you see the progression of growth of one of Latin America's most significant female writers. Allende's works are put in a particular context and you as a reader are able to engage her in viewing how she writes, why she writes and the significance it has for women and Latin America. Conversations is a "must have" text in doing any literary or biographical research on this great writer.

Cowboy and the Black-Eyed Pea
Published in School & Library Binding by Putnam Pub Group Juv (October, 1992)
Authors: Tony Johnston and Warren Ludwig
Average review score:

This book is an excellent storybook for young children.
The daughter of a wealthy Texas rancher, Farethee Well, uses a black-eyed pea to find her true love. This story is an excellent read-to-me book for children ages 4-9. The story is a parody of the fairy tale, Princess and the Pea. It is full of the language of the West and invites both boys and girls into the story for a lively tale.

Cowboy Fiddler in Bob Wills' Band
Published in Paperback by University of North Texas Press (April, 1997)
Authors: Frankie McWhorter, John R. Erickson, and Lanny Fiel
Average review score:

precious memories
Heart-warming memoir by an old-style Texas Fiddler and Cowboy. The reader can count on some candid remembrances of life on the road with Bob Wills. Excellent book; but if you're Old School Texas, as this South Texan reviewer is, be prepared to sigh every time you turn a page. They just don't make'em like Mr.McWhorter anymore, and we are all the poorer for it...

Cowboy Justice: Tale of a Texas Lawman

Additioal information for customers
Cowboy Justice won Westerners International Co-Founders Best Book Award and to great critical acclaim.

"Cowboy Justice is a nonfiction masterpiece that shows us a lawman who enforced the law because the Rule of Law was sacred to him. There was no sense of personal gain or selfish career building, nor was there a sense of power for power's sake. Gober deserves a place beside Earp, Masterson, Garrett and others who gained fame for their law enforcement. And yet, he almost stands alone when it comes to greatness tempered with courage and humility." ---Michael Martin Murphey
